Autism Aboriginal Way
Autism Aboriginal Way is a grassroots group that connects through Facebook.
Our members are parents and carers of Aboriginal kids and young people with Autism as well as Aboriginal adults identifying as autistic. You can’t do anything Aboriginal Way unless you do it family style and we are very proud of the grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins and siblings travelling with us on our journey. We have members from all over Australia and are feeling the benefit of connecting.
Autism Aboriginal Way is a safe and unique space where our culture, community, identity and spiritual beliefs can be part of the yarn. We believe that autism is a valuable set of strengths that would have been highly valued traditionally and has much to teach us even in the current world. We know autism is just another way of being too deadly and we want everyone else to know it too.
Our group was created on February 16th 2017 and already we have the strength of many tribes. We welcome other First Nations parents and all Aboriginal families with special needs.
One of the amazing things that has come out of our journey already is another facebook group called Indigenous People With Autism. This is an initiative of a young member of the Ngarrindjeri tribe Kyle Rigney. As Aboriginal people we have in common with Autistic adults in that we have struggled to have our voices recognised as the expert voice in our own business so we are very proud that this group exists.
